Hon Jenny Salesa to the Minister of Customs: What support or intelligence, if any, has the New Zealand Customs Service provided to Police to address the findings in the 2024 Drug Trends Survey that in some regions nearly 70% of methamphetamine supply is controlled by one or two gangs?

Hon Casey Costello: Domestic methamphetamine supply and intelligence is the responsibility of the New Zealand Police. However, I am advised that the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) works regularly with the New Zealand Police (Police) on a number of matters relating to controlled drugs and prohibited goods intercepted at the border, including through ‘Mahi Tahi’, an information disclosure agreement between Customs and the Police, where Customs provides information on a regular basis to Police Districts about border interceptions of illicit drugs and illegal firearms. I am also advised that Customs regularly works on joint investigations with the New Zealand Police and the National Organised Crime Group.
