29528 (2025). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Housing: Does he agree that the planned increase in Development Contributions (DCs) in areas like Redhills and Westgate, from $25,000 to $72,000 per dwelling, will likely contribute to further increases in both new and existing house prices, if not, why?
Hon Chris Bishop: Development in areas like Redhills and Westgate require a significant amount of infrastructure, such as stormwater and transport facilities, to ensure these places are good areas to live in. The purpose of DCs is to recover a fair/equitable portion of the cost of this infrastructure from those who benefit from and cause the need for it.
Developers in areas like Redhills and Westgate that pre-purchased land before the announced increase in DCs, may face financial difficulties. However, across Auckland, development would still be expected to go ahead where it makes most sense.
