29506 (2026). Shanan Halbert to the Minister for Tertiary Education: To date, how much, if any, of the $157 million contingency to support the transition away from Te Pūkenga has been spent, by amount and title of spending?
Hon Penny Simmonds: A $157.4 million contingency was set up in Budget 2024 to support the disestablishment of Te Pūkenga and the transition to a new vocational education and training network. To date $56.1 million has been appropriated and $24.9 million has been paid.
The $24.9 million that has been paid is comprised of the following:
- $10.0 million to Eastern Institute of Technology to support the rebuild and recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle.
- $6.0 million to Otago Polytechnic to support the repayment of its Crown loan.
- $4.5 million to NorthTec to resolve property issues and support property consolidation.
- $2.4 million to the Southern Institute of Technology to address deferred maintenance at its Telford campus.
- $2.0 million to NZIST to support the transition of Tai Poutini Polytechnic operations to the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand.
