29467 (2023). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Does the Minister intend to progress Minimum requirements for what schools must teach every year in reading, writing, maths, and science, as outlined in the National Party’s ‘Teaching the Basics Brilliantly Policy Document,’ and if so, what advice, reports, briefings, aides-memoire, or any other documents has the Minister, or any member of their Office commissioned on this by title and date?
Hon Erica Stanford: As set out in the Government’s 100-day plan, I am planning to appoint an expert group to redesign the English and Maths curricula for primary school students. I am also planning to require all primary and intermediate schools to teach one hour a day each of reading, writing and maths starting in 2024 The titles of advice that I have received on these matters, and the date that I received them, are as follows: • Progressing 100-day plan curriculum commitments, 26 November 2023 • Refresh of the New Zealand Curriculum and development of the common practice model, 27 November 2023. • Next steps in progressing 100-day plan commitments related to curriculum, 4 December 2023. • Examples of guidance and proposed timetabling for reading, writing and maths, 8 December 2023.
