29394 (2023). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education

29394 (2023). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: How many prosecutions, if any, were commenced against parents because their children were truant from school between 1990-1999?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised that the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) leads prosecutions against parents and caregivers for non-enrolment of their child in school and holds data from 2010. There have been 17 non-enrolment prosecutions between 2010 and 2023. There were three non-enrolment prosecutions between 2017 and 2023. The Ministry does not hold information on the outcome of prosecutions against parents for non-attendance of their child at school. School Boards lead the prosecutions for non-attendance and are not required to notify the Ministry if they are prosecuting parents. This is also my response to written parliamentary questions 29396, 29397, and 29398 (2023).
