29191 (2025). Camilla Belich to the Minister for the Public Service: What actions, if any, has the Minister or their office taken regarding public service agencies re-hiring ex-staff members as contractors?

Hon Judith Collins: No specific actions have been taken by the Minister or their office regarding public service agencies re-hiring ex-staff members as contractors. However, all Public Service chief executives are expected to exercise good judgement and have good policies in place regarding personnel and expenditure decisions. In addition, the government has provided a clear expectation that the Public Service and Crown entities will reduce expenditure on contractors and consultants. The Government set a two-year target to cut $400 million across the public sector by the end of 2024/25 and I am confident that we will exceed that target.
