29162 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing

29162 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: Does he stand by his statement at the Social Services and Community Committee on 17 June 2026 that there is "no particular science" to the setting of the income-related rent contribution rate that determines what social housing tenants pay?
Hon Chris Bishop: The setting of the income-related rent contribution reflects a range of policy considerations, including affordability for tenants, fairness, and the sustainability of the social housing system.
My comments made at the Social Services and Community Committee reflected that there is no single formula that determines this setting. Rather, it involves balancing these factors, informed by analysis and evidence, to ensure the system is appropriately targeted to those with the greatest need.
The Government continues to consider how settings can best support a well-functioning social housing system.
