29158 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: As part of the Government's review of social housing allocation, is it considering maximum limits on how long a tenant may remain in a social house, or new obligations on social housing tenants, and if so what is being considered?

Hon Chris Bishop: The Government has agreed in principle to a proposed policy direction for the social housing review. As part of our second key shift focussed on improving flows out of social housing to housing independence, the Government is exploring changes to support more movement through and out of social housing, including: • defined tenancy durations, with exemptions where need is ongoing, • a responsibilities framework to support progress toward independence, • better support to help households overcome barriers to private housing, • more regular engagement to assess changing needs and eligibility, including tenancy reviews. Officials are engaging with the sector and other stakeholders to help inform the development of that broad policy direction. No final decisions have been made on specific policy changes, and any proposals will be tested further through the policy process.
