29108 (2025). Hon Jenny Salesa to the Minister of Customs: How many container inspections were triggered by intelligence-led targeting compared to random selection, for each of the past five years?
Hon Casey Costello: I am advised that the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) does not report on containers, but on ‘trade transactions’. Trade transactions are lodged for the importation and exportation of goods. All these transactions are risk assessed against Customs targeting rules and intelligence and may be selected for risk-based or assurance intervention. Actions by Customs may include, but are not limited to, document inspection, x-ray scanning, or manual inspection.
The total number of trade transactions that underwent a physical inspection following a risk-based or Assurance Programme selection for the past five financial years is provided in the attached appendix.
