Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: What is the Government's current estimate of the number of people who are severely housing deprived, as the most recent estimate cited in the Homelessness Insights report to 31 March 2026 remains the 112,500 people recorded at the 2023 Census?

Hon Chris Bishop: The most robust measure of homelessness is the severe housing deprivation estimates from Census. From 2018 to 2023 the estimated number of people living without shelter rose from 3,624 to 4,965 people (7.8 per 10,000 people in 2018 to 10.1 per 10,000 in 2023). Over the same period total estimated homelessness increased by just over 13,000 people (from 99,462 people to 112,496 people).
