28774 (2025). Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Minister of Transport: What safety upgrades, if any, have been implemented to protect tamariki, kaumātua, and whānau who access the marae and kōhanga reo along this section of State Highway 1 between Ohau and Manakau?
Hon Chris Bishop: NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi made the following safety improvements along State Highway 1 between Ōhau and Manakau outside Tukorehe marae in early 2022 and Wehi Wehi marae in early 2024: • A wider centreline was added outside Wehi Wehi marae, along with new road surfacing and line markings. • The driveway into Wehi Wehi marae was resurfaced with asphalt. • The entrance outside Tukorehe marae was levelled, and an open drainage channel, new road surfacing, and line markings were added. • New warning and cultural signs were installed at both marae. Ngāti Tukorehe and Ngāti Wehi Wehi were engaged throughout the planning and design stages of the project.
