28711 (2025). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: How is Corrections ensuring that safe staffing ratios are maintained as prisoner numbers increase?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that detailed staffing models are prepared and maintained for each prison. These determine the FTE and rosters required to manage prisoners and this supports funding requirements and recruitment needs. Each prison staffing model reflects the capacity of the site, security classification of prisoners, site infrastructure, and services provided. Capacity and FTE requirements are continually reviewed and updated to reflect the actual and forecasted prison population.
I am further advised that prison facilities may operate with staffing levels that are different to the planned roster for various reasons such as unplanned staff absences, and staff accompanying prisoners for a hospital escort. Staff safety plans are developed daily to ensure safe staffing levels are maintained.
