28441 (2026). Camilla Belich to the Minister of Internal Affairs: What specific purposes are the Department of Internal Affairs' 111 Microsoft Copilot licences being used for, and is Copilot used in any way to inform or process identity services (such as passports or births, deaths and marriages), anti-money-laundering functions, or digital-safety and censorship classification?
Hon Brooke van Velden: As the Minister of Internal Affairs, I am advised that the Department’s Microsoft Copilot licences are used to support general productivity tasks, such as drafting and refining documents, and summarising information to improve the efficiency of day-to-day work. I am further advised that premium licences are held by a limited number of staff and enable access to and use of information from work emails, documents, and meetings within the Department’s secure Microsoft 365 environment. I am also advised that Microsoft Copilot is not used to inform or process identity services (such as passports or births, deaths and marriages), anti money laundering functions, or digital safety and censorship classification decisions. I am advised that its use within the Department is limited to administrative, productivity, and exploratory purposes.
