28433 (2025). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What is the breakdown, by role and location, of the 880 full-time equivalent new staff recruited since the launch of the recruitment campaign in February 2024?

Hon Mark Mitchell: Corrections is one of New Zealand’s largest core agencies, employing approximately 11,000 staff. The majority of Corrections’ workforce is deployed in frontline roles across 17 Corrections-managed prisons and many more Community Corrections sites across New Zealand. The remaining staff in back-office roles enable frontline staff to carry out their role by providing support. I am advised that the 880 full-time equivalent (FTE) new staff you refer to relates to the net increase in FTE frontline staff, which takes into account new starts as well as those that leave a frontline role. I am further advised that the total number of frontline staff hires from 1 February 2024 to date is 1,939. I am further advised that to provide a breakdown of each new frontline start by role and location, since February 2024, would amount to substantial collation and manual analysis to provide an answer to, which I am not prepared to ask for the purposes of this response. However, I refer the member to the attached table, which provides the number of frontline FTE, by role, as at 31 January 2024 and again at 31 May 2025, which indicates that the net increase during this timeframe is 986 FTE frontline staff.
