28158 (2025). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for the Public Service: What consideration, if any, was given to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, when undertaking policy analysis, if any, for the Plain Language Act Repeal Bill?

Hon Judith Collins: I refer the Member to the publicly available departmental disclosure statement prepared by the Public Service Commission that can be found on the NZ Legislation Disclosures website at: https://disclosure.legislation.govt.nz/bill/government/2025/132/ The use of plain language may help to meet international obligations, such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Our Government expects agencies to continue using plain language, and the repeal of the Act will not restrict agencies from communicating in plain language or continuing activities that promote its use.
