28030 (2026). Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Minister of Transport: What data, if any, has Waka Kotahi provided to the Minister on crash patterns, speed-related incidents, or high-risk behaviours on Desert Road since 2023?

Hon Chris Bishop: I have not received any such data. I have asked NZTA who advise that since 2023, there have been 6 fatal and 8 serious crashes recorded on the Desert Road (from Turangi to Waiouru). This includes 10 deaths and 13 people seriously injured. • 5 crashes were head-on • 9 crashes were single vehicle loss of control • 6 crashes involved alcohol • 2 crashes involved fatigue • 3 crashes involved trucks • 1 crash involved a motorcycle.
