27854 (2025). Ricardo Menéndez March to the Minister for Social Development and Employment
Written Question

27854 (2025). Ricardo Menéndez March to the Minister for Social Development and Employment: If an 18 or 19 year old who does not study or work, can't support themselves financially, and is not able to rely on parental support but meets all other relevant eligibility criteria, will they be entitled to the full Jobseeker Support benefit for 18 - 19 year olds?
Hon Louise Upston: I am informed by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) that young people who do require support from MSD will still be able to access it. For instance, in some cases 18- or 19-year-olds may not be able to rely on parental support. If they meet all other relevant eligibility criteria, they will be able to access some supports.
Cabinet will make final decisions on the Parental Assistance Test later this year, including exceptions and the timing for legislation.
This is also my written response to 27852 (2025) and 27856 (2025).
