27176 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Lead Coordination Minister for the Government's Response to the Royal Commission’s Report into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions: How many Lake Alice survivors involved in the 2001 settlement with the Crown did the Minister speak to ahead of the October 2024 Lake Alice announcement?
Hon Erica Stanford: When meeting with survivors of the Lake Alice Child and Adolescent Unit this was not information I actively sought. In some instances survivors disclosed it themselves when they raised the historic inequity of the treatment of legal fees associated with round 1. In other instances they were raising it on behalf of other survivors. I note that the 2001 settlement took place under a Labour-led Government that refused to cover survivors' legal fees. Requests were also made to the previous Government during the Royal Commission who also did not act. This historic wrong that was finally righted by this Government last year.
