Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: How many registered nurses, if any, does Health New Zealand plan to employ in 2026/27, broken down by New Zealand-trained nurses graduating in 2026/27, other New Zealand-trained nurses, Australian-qualified nurses, and internationally qualified nurses from countries other than Australia?

Hon Simeon Brown: I am advised that recruitment occurs in response to workforce requirements, service demand, staff turnover, and vacancies across different locations and specialties. As a result, the number of nurses recruited domestically and internationally during 2026/27 cannot be determined in advance.
