25386 (2025). Hon Barbara Edmonds to the Minister for Sport and Recreation: What fiscal cliffs, if any, does the Minister’s responsible agencies, if any, face following budget 2025?
Hon Mark Mitchell: A number of cost pressures have been identified across the Sport NZ Group relating to salary pressures, inflationary pressures on operating costs for the Sport NZ Group and the Sector and targeted investments into athlete wellbeing. For 2024-2028, these cost pressures are being addressed by:
• efficiencies across Sport NZ Group personnel and operating spend;
• reprioritisation of investments, programmes and activity through the2024-2028 strategy;
• utilisation of accumulated reserves;
• reallocation of funding by stopping COVID-19 recovery Hawaiki Hou programme.
There is an unmitigated cost pressure that exists in 2028 for which further work is underway or will be completed including:
• A review of High Performance funding which will quantify the cost pressures (due to occur in 2025);
• A four-yearly strategy and investment reset will occur in 2027-2028 in advance of the 2028-2032 strategy and Olympic cycle. This will identify options and trade-offs necessary to fit within projected funding envelopes at the time.
