Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What changes, if any, are expected, forecast, planned, or assumed to be made to the use of double bunking during 2026/27, broken down by prison site, unit where applicable, expected timing, number of double-bunked cells or beds affected, and reason for the change?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised Corrections has significant experience and expertise when managing projected or actual increases in the prison population. As noted in my response to WPQ 24502 (2026), Corrections has worked to increase accommodation in response to the growing prison population, providing the capacity needed to manage population pressures safely. This includes the continued use of double bunking. I am further advised that no changes to the use of double bunking have been forecast or planned for 2026/27. Its use will continue to be actively managed on an operational basis to ensure the safety of people in custody and staff, and to respond to changes in the prison population.
