23914 (2025). Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister of Transport: What actions, if any, has the Government taken to work with Gisborne District Council as the Road Controlling Authority for managing bridge access across the local roading network, specifically bridges that have not yet been restored since they were destroyed by Cyclone Gabrielle?
Hon Chris Bishop: I am advised that the NZ Transport Agency has provided significant financial and technical support to Gisborne District Council (GDC) for bridge replacements and access restoration following Cyclone Gabrielle, including full or near-full funding for temporary structures (Bailey bridges), bridge replacements, and design work through the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF). In addition, the Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has provided $125 million to GDC to help establish bridges across the region. More information is available here: https://www.gdc.govt.nz/our-recovery/roads-to-recovery#heading-0 Additional funding has also been made available to affected councils, including GDC, through Budget 2025 to complete North Island Weather Events (NIWE) recovery works on local roads.
