23393 (2025). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: What reports, briefings, emails, memos, aides-memoire, notes or written advice, if any, has the Minister and/or her Office received regarding a "maths crisis"; listed by title and date received?
Hon Erica Stanford: I receive regular reports from the Ministry of Education detailing progress against the Government’s target of having 80% of students at, or above, the expected curriculum level for their age in reading, writing and maths by December 2030. The reports I have received are listed in the attached table. A summary of this data is publicly available on the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s website at https://www.dpmc.govt.nz/our-programmes/government-targets. On 16 August 2024, I also received a briefing on results from the 2023 Curriculum Insights and Progress Study, publicly available at https://web-assets.education.govt.nz/s3fs-public/2024-12/1333735%20-%20Curriculum%20Insights%20%20Progress%20Study%20Foundational%20Areas%202023%20Reading%20%20Maths%20Results%20Report.pdf?VersionId=8ckVBQb_VqxfM6odGzXBb2_vP9oP.pyF Further information on the 2023 Curriculum Insights and Progress Study is publicly available on the Education Counts website, at https://www.educationcounts.govt.nz/publications/series/curriculum-insights-and-progress-study/curriculum-insights-and-progress-study-foundational-area-mathematics-and-reading-results-2023.
