23369 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Space: What is being done, if anything, to address the ethical implications of supporting military applications of commercial space technologies?
Hon Judith Collins: All space activities conducted from New Zealand or by New Zealand entities overseas must comply with the Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Act 2017. This includes the requirement to be consistent with our international obligations and not contradict our national interests and national security. Space activities with national security applications are not inherently contrary to New Zealand’s national interests – instead this is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
