22925 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What progress, if any, has been made in the quarter January – March 2024 in implementing the goal ‘Staff will have resourcing for and access to learning NZ Sign Language (NZSL).' as part of the Disability Action Plan?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that this is a short term action in Corrections’ Disability Action Plan. I am further advised that this action has been prioritised for delivery later in 2024, however, some related work has already occurred, as follows: • In 2023, Corrections explored training packages with different providers to meet the needs of tāngata whaikaha Māori, disabled people and the frontline staff that support them. This work is ongoing. • For Disability Pride Month in July 2024, Corrections is planning an online education session for Corrections staff about NZSL and deaf culture. • A weekly email sent to all staff from Corrections’ Chief Executive included the promotion of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and an accompanying video.
