21955 (2025). Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister for Biosecurity: What assessment, if any, has the Government made of the economic risk posed by exotic Caulerpa to aquaculture, commercial marine industries, and customary kaimoana gathering?

Hon Andrew Hoggard: The impact and ecology of exotic caulerpa in New Zealand conditions is still not fully understood, which makes it difficult to adequately assess economic risk. Biosecurity New Zealand has contracted Auckland University to undertake a study of the ecological impacts of exotic caulerpa in New Zealand, and National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) to investigate the cause of the die-off events that occurred at some locations over the course of the last summer.
