20346 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: How many newly built social houses delivered so far in 2025/26 were two bedroom units and what percentage of all newly built social houses delivered so far this year does that represent?

Hon Chris Bishop: It is clear we need more one and two bedroom social housing places: 84% of households on the Housing Register need one or two bedrooms, but only 53% of existing social housing stock is one or two bedrooms. It will take a sustained effort to meet this need. That’s why this Government is really focussed on delivering 1-2 bedrooms. Through Budget 2024 and Budget 2025 the Government funded Community Housing Providers (CHPs) to deliver at least 2,050 additional social housing places. 2,175 places have already been either delivered or approved, and of these, 85% are one or two bedrooms. Our new Flexible Fund and Housing Investment Plan provides a four year funding pipeline for the CHP sector and ensures that the right houses go in the right places for the right people. Kāinga Ora are also prioritising smaller homes through their renewal programme. They are aiming to increase the delivery of one-bedroom homes from about 10 percent of newly built homes to around 25 percent by 2030. From 2023/24, Kāinga Ora has delivered, or plans to deliver, 6,685 one and two bedroom places, representing over 60% of their total funded deliveries. The delivery rate of smaller typologies is lower for Kāinga Ora because they need to take a more balanced approach that caters for the needs of existing tenant households that need to be rehoused.
