Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: Further to Replies 11661, 13174 and 17202 (2026): (a) does the requirement referred to in Reply 13174 for NZTA's Agents to contact NZTA before processing overseas licence conversion applications, or any equivalent verification measure, apply to applications from the United Kingdom, Canada, or Australia; (b) has NZTA established any verification arrangement with the licensing authorities of those countries equivalent to the verification of certificates against UAE Ministry of Interior records referred to in Reply 17202; and (c) if not, why not?

Hon Chris Bishop: The requirement referred to in my reply to 13174 (2026) does not apply to conversions from the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia. No widespread issues were identified in applications from these countries. NZTA advises me that none of these countries have been identified as having a central government online portal for verification that is open for public use, in line with what the UAE has. The United Kingdom has the ability for a licence holder to share their driver licencing information with NZTA, by requesting a one-time use, time limited code for NZTA to use. NZTA has varying arrangements in place with the Australian state/territory driving licensing authorities for verification. In addition to this, NZTA has access to other guides and tools for assisting in the verification of driver licences.
