Written Question

19935 (2026). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: Further to Reply 18716 (2026): (a) will the Minister release any emails, file notes, briefings, meeting minutes, or other NZTA records from February 2025 to 1 August 2025 that reference NZ Police, the Road Safety Intelligence Team, or potential notification of either; (b) between February 2025 and 1 August 2025, did any individual within NZTA at or above the level of Manager raise, propose, or discuss the question of NZ Police notification with any colleague, in writing or orally; and (c) what is the basis for the statement in Reply 18716 that NZTA did not consider notifying NZ Police until the fraud was confirmed?
Hon Chris Bishop: In response to the first part of your question, such documents would need to be collated and assessed in accordance with the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). As NZTA records are held by NZTA, the Member may wish to request these documents directly from NZTA under the Act.
(b) NZTA advised me that they have not identified any meeting notes, emails or individuals that have identified any conversations that discussed any other approach to providing NZ Police with information.
(c) I am advised by NZTA that this statement reflects the fact that, at the time, the matter was still under investigation, and the suspected fraud had not yet been substantiated. Consistent with earlier replies, NZTA’s approach was to verify and confirm the fraud before considering referral to NZ Police.
