19847 (2025). Shanan Halbert to the Minister for Universities: What are the Ministers priorities in the portfolio?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: My initial priorities for the Universities portfolio are participation, completion, commercialisation and integration. I have tasked officials to start work to reset the Tertiary Education Strategy (TES) and craft investment plan signals and PBRF parameters (work with the Minister for Vocational Education). In the new TES, I will set out the Government’s priorities for the tertiary education system, and drive delivery on the Government’s Going for Growth agenda. It will shape Tertiary Education Organisations’ investment plans and the Tertiary Education Commission’s (TEC) funding decisions. I would like to drive effective, coordinated and sustained implementation of system improvements, these include strengthening universities’ contribution to the science innovation and technology system, as new Public Research Organisations are established out of the Crown Research Institutes.
