19833 (2026). Hon Julie Anne Genter to the Minister for Rail: What advice, if any, has the MInister received about investing further in electrification of the North Island Rail network?

Rt Hon Winston Peters: We received great advice last year regarding the completion of the Papakura to Pukekohe electrification project in 2025, which was funded by the Minister for State Owned Enterprises in 2020. This project expanded Auckland's metropolitan rail network and enables a consistent fleet of rolling stock to serve commuters in Auckland. As for further electrification of the Golden Triangle, a detailed business case is still with KiwiRail for further work, and we look forward to considering it once presented.
