19826 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Attorney-General: Which of the 138 recommendations of the Royal Commission into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions, if any, does the Minister have lead responsibility for?

Hon Judith Collins: Of the 138 recommendations contained in Whanaketia, the Abuse Inquiry's final report, five of the recommendations relate to the operation of Crown Law (recommendations 3, 22, 23, 24 and 33). The Attorney-General has responsibility for these recommendations only to the extent that she is the Minister of the Crown with ministerial responsibility for the Crown Law Office. Many of the Abuse Inquiry's other recommendations will require significant policy work and/or legislation by relevant agencies. Crown Law may contribute to this policy work and PCO will draft legislation as needed, but they will not be the lead agency and the Attorney-General does not have lead responsibility for these recommendations. In addition, the Abuse Inquiry's 2021 redress report contained two recommendations relating to the operation of Crown Law (recommendations 82 and 83). As above, Crown Law may contribute to the policy work required for these recommendations, but it will not be the lead agency and the Attorney-General does not have lead responsibility for these recommendations.
