19772 (2025). Benjamin Doyle to the Minister of Internal Affairs: As at 29 April 2025, what is the total number of unpaid volunteer firefighters currently on call for Fire and Emergency New Zealand?

Hon Brooke van Velden: I am advised by Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fire and Emergency) that, as of 30 April 2025, a total of 8,552 volunteer firefighters are currently active. This excludes non-operational, operational support, and recruit firefighter roles. Volunteers can have multiple contracts with Fire and Emergency. The total refers to the unique count of volunteers in firefighter roles.
