Hon Erica Stanford: While there are various methods of teaching structured literacy, the key elements of all of methods include: • phonemic awareness • systematic synthetic phonics teaching and knowledge • using a scope and sequence • fluency • comprehension • oral language • vocabulary • handwriting • syntax • text structure for the purpose of reading and writing. The Ministry of Education’s expectation is that all providers will deliver on these key aspects of structured literacy approaches.
