19583 (2024). Celia Wade-Brown to the Minister of Conservation: What advice, if any, has the Minister received on the percentage of native species currently at risk or threatened by extinction?

Hon Tama Potaka: The Department of Conservation advised me in the Briefing to the Incoming Minister of Conservation, November 2023, that of the estimated 80,000 native species, more than 4000 are known to be either at risk or threatened with extinction. The Department provided me with a NZTCS (New Zealand Threat Classification System) report on the family Rhytididae (large carnivorous land snails) in February 2024. Of the 109 taxa in the family Rhytididae assessed in this report, 74 were categorised as Threatened and 22 as At Risk.
