19577 (2024). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Housing: What impact, if any, is the return of no-cause evictions expected to have on demand and expenditure for accommodation-related hardship assistance?
Hon Chris Bishop: The impacts on demand and expenditure for accommodation-related assistance are dependent on to what extent the return of no-cause terminations increases termination numbers and what proportion of tenants whose tenancies are terminated are unable to secure housing in the private market. The regulatory impact statement noted a risk of increased costs to the Crown at the margins, if increases in government housing support is required for households unable to secure new housing in the private market after their tenancy is ended. However, it also noted there could be reduced demand on government housing support if people previously reliant on government housing support would now be able to access the private rental market. It assessed these impacts as low.
