19534 (2025). Shanan Halbert to the Minister for Vocational Education: How is a Managed Apprenticeship defined?
Hon Penny Simmonds: An apprenticeship is a type of vocational education and training for people that are working in industry while undertaking study or training that leads to a qualification that provides entry into an occupation and is delivered wholly or in part at the person’s workplace.
The term ‘Managed Apprenticeships’ is used to refer to provider-based apprenticeships delivered by Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics, Wānanga, and Private Training Establishments, prior to the 2020 Reform of Vocational Education.
Learners are still able to complete apprenticeships through “New Zealand Apprenticeships”. Any provider-based apprenticeships are considered New Zealand Apprenticeships for funding conditions and requirements.
