19250 (2025). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Housing: How many Kāinga Ora developments have been cancelled or put under review so far this year, if any, broken down by region and unit total?
Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities is in the process of rephasing units in the social housing pipeline that have not been contracted to align with the Government’s expectations, as set out in the Letter of Expectations. All Kāinga Ora social housing projects which have already been contracted for delivery are proceeding as planned. While these projects have been put through our assessment process and a decision has been made to not progress with them as originally planned, it is important to note this doesn't mean development on these sites will never proceed. The projects may need to be re-designed to achieve best value for money or other options for the site will be considered, including using the home as is, renovating the home, or selling an older home and replacing it with a new home elsewhere. The turnaround plan sets out in more detail how Kāinga Ora intends to meet both the financial commitments from Budget 2024 and the expectations set out in the LOE. I am advised by Kāinga Ora that as at 31 March 2025 there were 33 projects under review. I refer the Member to the attached table, which includes the total number of projects and units not proceeding between 1 January 2025 and 31 March 2025.
