19249 (2025). Tamatha Paul to the Minister for Children: What mechanisms, if any, exist to hold the government youth bootcamp accountable for failures, particularly in cases of serious incidents such as death, absconding, or reoffending?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that as a pilot, the Military Style Academy is operating under existing legislation and is subject to the standard Oranga Tamariki policies, quality assurance and monitoring systems for youth justice. I am further advised that Oranga Tamariki is also subject to health and safety obligations and has a duty of care towards young people and staff. There are also external monitoring agencies with a legal mandate to investigate matters, if necessary.
