19244 (2025). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: What are the total estimated financial savings, if any, expected to be generated by the recent change proposal for the Public Defense Service?

Hon Paul Goldsmith: If the Public Defence Service change proposal is confirmed, the savings from the proposed disestablishment of 25 positions is $2.391m. The Net Savings, after the establishment of 12 new positions and the proposed 12 new lawyer positions, is expected to be $62k. If the Public Defence Service change proposal is confirmed, there will therefore be increased capacity for the Public Defence Service to receive more cases which contributes to savings for the Legal Aid appropriation.
