Mike Davidson to the Minister of Internal Affairs: Will the Minister acknowledge the World Health Organisation's finding that firefighters are at risk of occupational exposure to carcinogens and if so, what steps, if any, will she take to ensure meaningful and ongoing support, protection, health and safety from the cancerous hazards associated with their work?

Hon Brooke van Velden: Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, employers, including Fire and Emergency New Zealand, must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of their workers. This includes managing risks associated with exposure to hazardous substances, including carcinogens encountered during firefighting. Fire and Emergency New Zealand has a range of controls in place to protect firefighters working in environments where hazardous substances may be present. These include operational doctrine and procedures, training, personal protective equipment and clothing, firefighting equipment, and post fire decontamination practices, including the rollout of post fire management kits and supporting guidance to reduce exposure to contaminants. Fire and Emergency continue to review international evidence and best practice. I expect all workplace health and safety obligations to continue to be met. I am advised that Fire and Emergency New Zealand continue to consider opportunities to strengthen controls and support for firefighters in relation to occupational cancer risks.
