18947 (2026). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What proportion of construction work on the Christchurch Men's Prison Redevelopment is expected to be delivered by New Zealand-based firms, if any?

Hon Mark Mitchell: Corrections is still in the process of final negotiations with the preferred bidder. Accordingly, there is currently no confirmed indication of a specific amount of construction work expected to be delivered by New Zealand-based firms as part of the Christchurch Men’s Prison redevelopment. However, it is noted that the bidding consortia includes both international and New Zealand-based construction companies, including Leighs Construction – a locally owned and operated construction company who will jointly deliver the construction work for the redevelopment and will engage local contractors across a multitude of trade disciplines. I refer the member to my response to 18945 (2026), noting that a peak workforce of 600 people is expected to be engaged during construction, presenting significant opportunities for local and regional contractors and firms.
