18795 (2026). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: What analysis, aides-mémoire, briefings, memos, notes, reports, or any other advice, if any, has the Minister or their office seen about an invitation from the US to reopen the strait of Hormuz by date and title?

Rt Hon Winston Peters: We have been in regular contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (the Ministry) in receiving advice and reports about the US preliminary proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has informed the Government's position on this and related matters. This includes the Ministry informing us, the Prime Minister, and some other Ministers on 29 April 2026 that they had received initial and preliminary information from the US regarding the proposal to reopen the Strait. Our office, the Prime Minister's office, and other Ministers have not been approached directly by the US on the proposal. Our position has not changed from our public statements that we are in the process of asking questions and seeking more information about this preliminary proposal. Accordingly, we are not close to a point where the New Zealand Government would be making any decisions about it.
