18502 (2026). Vanushi Walters to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: What steps, if any, has the Minister taken to ensure the safe return to New Zealand of all citizens detained by the Israeli Defense Force following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near the Greek island of Crete on or around 1 May 2026, and can the Minister confirm whether any New Zealand citizens remain in custody or are subject to restrictions on their movement?
Rt Hon Winston Peters: Consular assistance for New Zealanders overseas is provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is an operational matter for the Ministry.
The Ministry worked actively to gather information, provide advice to families, and support the New Zealand citizens involved. The Ministry and New Zealand Embassy in Ankara has also made several formal representations to the Israeli government, including the Ambassador level.
No New Zealanders remain in custody or are subject to movement restrictions.
