Vanushi Walters to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: Has the Minister been consulted by the Prime Minister or any other minister on New Zealand's response to the United States request to join a coalition to reopen the Strait of Hormuz; if so, on what dates did those consultations occur?

Rt Hon Winston Peters: We have been in regular contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) in receiving advice and reports about the United States' preliminary proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has informed the Government's position on this and related matters. This engagement included MFAT informing us, the Prime Minister and some other Ministers on 29 April 2026 that it had received initial and preliminary information from the US regarding a proposal to reopen the Strait. Our office, the Prime Minister's office, and other Ministers' offices have not been approached directly by the US Government on the proposal. Our position on the proposal has not changed from our public statements that we are in the process of asking questions and seeking more information about this preliminary proposal. Accordingly, we are not close to a point where the New Zealand Government would be making any decisions about it.
