17891 (2026). Mike Davidson to the Minister of Internal Affairs: In the last 12 months, what progress has the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Carcinogen Control Project made in its four main workstreams, if any?
Hon Brooke van Velden: I am advised that Fire and Emergency’s Carcinogen Control Project was closed on 7 November 2024. Fire and Emergency has taken practical steps to reduce firefighters’ exposure to carcinogens. This includes completing the rollout of Post Fire Management kits to its busiest brigades. These kits include specialist decontamination equipment, such as wipes designed to remove harmful contaminants after incidents, along with clear cleaning and processing protocols. This work is supported by training material provided to brigades, which reinforces good post fire decontamination practices and helps reduce the risk of ongoing exposure to carcinogens
