17764 (2026). Chlöe Swarbrick to the Minister for Energy: Has MBIE estimated the weekly average fuel import cost, or fuel importer margin for the week ending 24 March 2026 and subsequent, and if so, what are those estimates?
Hon Simeon Brown: Yes, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) continues to collect information to estimate importer costs and fuel margins. MBIE collects the same information as listed in its methodology page on fuel margins: (https://www.mbie.govt.nz/building-and-energy/energy-and-natural-resources/energy-statistics-and-modelling/energy-statistics/weekly-fuel-price-monitoring).
MBIE is planning to resume publication of the full series, including for the period when MBIE stopped publishing importer margins. This will be done following the completion of quality assurance checks and appropriate communications and consultation.
Updates to MBIE’s plans for resuming the series will be published on the weekly fuel price monitoring webpage (https://www.mbie.govt.nz/building-and-energy/energy-and-natural-resources/energy-statistics-and-modelling/energy-statistics/weekly-fuel-price-monitoring).
