Hon Julie Anne Genter to the Minister of Transport: Further to his OPQ response on 10 April 2025, will Road Controlling Authorities be able to retain 30kmph speed limits if these were implemented due to proximity to a school and if refreshed consultation supports this, if so, and what is the threshold of community support required for them to be able to retain those speed limits?

Hon Chris Bishop: I am advised that all roads where speed limits were lowered because they were in proximity of a school must be reversed or changed to a 30 km/h Variable Speed Limit for the stretch of road outside the school gate by the relevant deadlines. However, under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024, Road Controlling Authorities (RCAs) can undertake a new speed review and consult on a new speed limit to come into effect after 1 July, when the reversal has taken place. Consultation can commence at any time. Outside of the process set out in Schedule 2, the Rule does not define a threshold of community support required and is only one of the requirements that must be met to propose a new speed limit.
