17367 (2026). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Corrections: How many female prisoners, if any, have been housed in male Correctional facilities since May 2025?
Hon Mark Mitchell: None.
However, I am also advised that where additional consideration is required to determine a prisoner’s placement in a male or female facility (for example, in the case of transgender or intersex individuals), the Chief Executive must determine whether the prisoner is to be treated as a male or female prisoner for placement purposes.
I refer the member to the operational policy governing this process set out in the Prison Operations Manual, which is publicly available at the following link: https://www.corrections.govt.nz/resources/policy_and_legislation/Prison-Operations-Manual/Movement/M.03-Specified-gender-and-age-movements/M.03.05-Transgender-prisoner
