17157 (2026). Chlöe Swarbrick to the Minister for Economic Growth: Has she received advice, if any, regarding the relationship between supermarket duopoly profits and rising food prices, and if so, what is that advice?
Hon Nicola Willis: I have received advice that indicates that a lack of competition in the grocery sector contributes to high food prices and profits for the major supermarkets in New Zealand. That is why the Government has announced actions to make it easier for new competitors to enter the grocery market, discourage anti-competitive conduct, and give consumers better choices.
